Executive Brief

Project Overview

In rural central Zambia, secondary schools are few and far between. Many students, especially adolescent girls, had to walk up to 15 kilometres each way or stay in unregulated, unsafe rented huts near rural schools, exposing them to exploitation. In partnership with ChildFund Korea and ChildFund Zambia, MCDA constructed modern 1x4 classroom blocks and 60-bed protected girls' dormitories equipped with clean water, solar lighting, and resident matrons.

Context & Challenge

The Community Need

The absence of nearby secondary schools forced adolescent girls to embark on unsafe daily walks of up to 15 kilometres or self-board in unprotected village huts where gender-based violence was prevalent.

Implementation Model

Our Response

MCDA constructed modern 1x4 classroom blocks and 60-bed protected girls dormitories equipped with solar lighting, clean borehole water, modern ablution blocks and resident matron accommodation.

Grassroots Leadership

Community Participation & Local Ownership

Community boards and local leaders participated in construction monitoring, boundary fencing and ongoing school welfare committee supervision.
