Executive Brief

Project Overview

For generations, harmful social norms in Mumbwa District resulted in early child marriage and high adolescent dropout rates. Implemented by MCDA in partnership with the Forum for African Women Educationalists in Zambia (FAWEZA) and ChildFund, the Lusumpuko project engages traditional chiefs, village headpersons, and parent groups to challenge harmful practices. Through community dialogues, girls' empowerment clubs, and rapid protection referrals, the project has successfully intervened to end child marriages and return girls to formal schooling.

Context & Challenge

The Community Need

Entrenched social norms and household poverty in rural Mumbwa placed adolescent girls at high risk of forced early marriage, teenage pregnancy and discontinuation of schooling.

Implementation Model

Our Response

MCDA establishes community dialogues with traditional leaders, operates school-based girls empowerment clubs, trains Community Child Protection Committees, and provides rapid rescue mediation and educational bursaries.

Grassroots Leadership

Community Participation & Local Ownership

Traditional chiefs and village headpersons act as chief champions, enforcing local bylaws that prohibit child marriage and penalise perpetrators while welcoming rescued girls back into family and community life.
