Executive Brief

Project Overview

Established on 30 July 1960, Katete Primary School is a government school in Mayaba Village under Mungule Chiefdom. In early 2026, the school recorded an enrolment of 1,443 learners (723 girls and 720 boys) served by just 18 teachers, a ratio of approximately 1:80. The severe shortage of classrooms and dignified sanitation has put immense pressure on teachers and students. MCDA is constructing a permanent 1x3 modern classroom block and a 6-compartment hygienic ablution block to promote dignified sanitation, improve girl child retention, and create an enabling learning environment.

Context & Challenge

The Community Need

With 1,443 learners and only makeshift learning shelters, classes operated on triple shifts with up to 80 pupils per teacher. Lack of hygienic, gender-separated sanitation forced adolescent girls to miss school during menstruation, driving up absenteeism and early dropout rates.

Implementation Model

Our Response

MCDA is constructing a permanent 1x3 classroom block fully furnished with modern pupil double desks and teacher stations, together with a durable six-compartment ventilated improved pit (VIP) ablution block featuring running water access.

Grassroots Leadership

Community Participation & Local Ownership

The Mayaba Village community, led by Chief Mungule's council and the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), mobilised local building sand, crushed stones and volunteer labour for foundation excavation, ensuring genuine community ownership.

Accountability & Verification

Expected Deliverables & Outputs
