Executive Brief

Project Overview

Access to safe drinking water is fundamental to child health, school attendance, and maternal well-being. MCDA has drilled, equipped, and rehabilitated 233 boreholes across Mumbwa, Shibuyunji, and Chibombo districts, serving approximately 50,000 rural residents. In addition, over 30,000 water purification sachets were distributed to over 5,000 vulnerable households during dry seasons. The agency trains local pump menders and community water management committees to ensure 100% long-term local sustainability.

Context & Challenge

The Community Need

Receding water tables and prolonged droughts forced women and children to walk up to 5 kilometres each morning to collect contaminated water from open shallow pits, causing chronic waterborne illnesses.

Implementation Model

Our Response

MCDA sited, drilled and installed 233 heavy-duty community boreholes with concrete aprons and soakaway drainage, supported by household water treatment distribution during emergency drought windows.

Grassroots Leadership

Community Participation & Local Ownership

Each water point is governed by an elected Village Water Committee responsible for user maintenance fees, pump caretaker oversight and fence protection.

Accountability & Verification
